I was born in Baltimore, Md and moved to Miami, Fl in 1996. When it comes to football I’m a Baltimore Ravens fan and as for basketball, I’m a big fan of the Miami Heat! I have love for both my hometown and my adopted hometown for the past 18 years. So when I was invited during Art Basel 2013 to check out The Girls of Baltimore exhibit, I was excited to check out the works especially since I am also a girl from Baltimore. I missed the opening but had a chance to visit a few days ago. I contacted The Betsy and was advised the exhibition is on view thru March 2014.

The Betsy-South Beach is proudly presenting The Girls of Baltimore, in the Underground Gallery. On view are words and works by Joyce Scott, Ellen Burchenal, Linda DePalma, Oletha DeVane, and Patti Tronolone. Their project embraces folk art, ethnic traditions, pop culture, and social justice.
The exhibition is curated by Dr. Leslie King Hammond (a Baltimore Girl), wide-lauded curator, Chairperson at Baltimore’s Reginald Lewis Museum, Dean Emeritus of Graduate Studies and founder of MICA’S Center for Race and Culture. “The Girls of Baltimore” hitched their wagons to each other many years ago, receiving an NEA grant in 2001 to create a collaborative show, and working since then to empower women’s voice in art. In the words of Dr. King- Hammond, “We say we’re from Baltimore but we’re really women of the world, and are privileged to have shared life’s journey as independent artists and creative collaborators.” Scholar and curator, Dr. Leslie King Hammond has been The Betsy’s Visual Arts Ambassador since 2009, leveraging Betsy’s vision to “do something new that matters in the world of art.”
