#Durham enjoys a night of #RetroSoul @DPAC w/@LeonBridges & @LianneLahavas #ComingHome Tour

leon

A little more than a year ago Leon Bridges http://leonbridges.com/music-and-video/ was a 23 year old dishwasher in Dallas/Ft.Worth, Texas. He played whatever gigs he could get at local coffee houses there on the side. Tonight he performed before thousands at the DPAC arena in Durham http://www.dpacnc.com/ What a difference a year makes!

He put two of his songs on the Sound Cloud music platform last year that garnered the attention of Columbia Records who promptly signed him to do an album. While his first album was in production, he built further buzz during last year’s SXSW festival in Austin. He was THE topic of the entire festival and his following grew. His debut album entitled, “Coming Home” was released in June 2015. He had arrived. The Album’s title piece became a hit. The album was recorded on Analog straight to tape. This old school method {which D’Angelo also used for his underground album “Messiah”}captures a richness that digital simply cannot. He has been compared to Sam Cooke and the comparison is valid.

Lianne la Havas, http://www.liannelahavas.com/ the acoustic folk alternative singer/guitarist opened for him. This British ingĂ©nue has carved out her own little niche amongst her fans. Her crisp playing and song bird delivery was a delight to behold. She performed a few songs from her grammy nominated album, “Blood”. Instead of wardrobe changes, Lianne changed acoustic guitars 3 times during her set! It was A great beginning to a wonderful evening.

leon4

The headliner was up next. Leon’s smooth delivery and stage presence was magnetic. His clothing; bowling shirt and polished brown saddle shoes are an important part of bringing the 50’s and 60’s back to life. But garb alone is not enough for long term success. His talent is unique. He commanded the stage and had the audience in a soul induced trance. I was pulled into the rhythm of his guitar and yesteryear voice. Warm and rich like a warm mug of cocoa on a cold winter evening. Leon is different than everything else out there today and THAT is a good thing indeed.

#SobeSavvy shares #Hopscotch16 Highlights! @HopscotchFestival #Raleigh #Music #Festival

Hopscotch was a favorite child’s game of mine. I used to skip from one number to another number on one foot. I had the pleasure going to a fantastic music festival with all performance venues/acts concentrated in downtown Raleigh. This 3 day festival is aptly named HOPSCOTCH! http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/

Fans can literally just hop and skip to see multiple acts one after another after another just a block or two apart !

img_20160909_124656

This is Hopscotch’s 7th year throwing one of the most fun and eclectic music festivals in the nation. This year over 20,000 fans can expect to see 120 regional and national artists/bands in various downtown clubs and theaters. Some acts are even performing at the CAM art museum. We spent 9 straight hours Friday taking in as much of the festival that we could! For the first time in festival history they utilized The Red Hat Ampitheatre for Friday night. The weather was warm and sultry. In other words..PERFECT!

The festival’s “wristband city” was set up inside the Raleigh Convention center. Attendees went there to pick up their wristbands and visit various sponsor booths and view some eclectic modern art pieces.

The soul blues rocker himself, Gary Clark Jr performed a great set. He is an amazing guitarist and vocalist that reminds one of past soul rock greats.

Up next was the headliner, the amazing Ms. Erykah Badu. She blessed the fans with an extended set which included her playful banter and many of her great hits. Fans delighted in her spiritual energy and unique force of her voice.

Unlike most music festivals that are centered around one genre of music, Hopscotch defies that norm. Artists here perform almost every genre one could imagine. From Bluegrass and country to New Orleans own gender bending self proclaimed “Queen Of Bounce”, Big Freedia.

Freedia performed a late night/early morning set at the famous Lincoln Theatre venue. The crowd was diverse and full of bounce energy. Big Freedia and her crew gave what can only be descibes as a “COLORFUL” performance ! See the IG video below, which clearly verifies my description of her performance.

Artists perform indoors at various clubs and music venues that fans must have a paid wristband to enter but some acts perform in open air city plaza downtown where anyone can just hang out and vibe to the unique welcoming atmosphere that Hopscotch is known for.

Fans can opt to purchase one day wristbands, which gives you access to all venues and Red Hat on Friday night or for a real deal, buy a 3 day band to enjoy everything and everyone the festival has to offer.

Check out this link for the official schedule: http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/schedule/

They also have a fantastic App for the festival where you can build your own custom schedule of acts you want to see. Get in in the Google Play Store for Android or in Apple App Store.

You still have a few hours to enjoy the fest..See ya next year !!

@KoolntheGngLIVE @Bootsy_Collins @TheMorrisDay strives to #KeepinTheFunkAlive in #Raleigh

On Saturday July 24,2016 , SobeSavvy.com joined thousands of other funk music veterans at The Walnut Creek Amphitheatre to experience Bootsy Collins, Kool & The Gang along with Morris Day & The Time.

DJ Doug E. Fresh opened up the evening with one of his classic sets familiar with the young and old{er} alike!! Former James Brown band member, world renowned bassist Bootsy Collins was up first. Bootsy was an integral part of Parlament/Funkadelic in the 70’s. He also has worked with a myriad of other artists throughout his 40 year career. He played many of his classics like “I’d Rather Be With You and “Let me ride” to name a few. He made multiple costume changes since he is also known for his colorful and outrageous stage stylings !

Next up was Morris Day and The Time. They started their set with a video tribute to their mentor and friend, Prince Rogers Nelson. Once that touching video montage ended it was time to party. They went through some of their many memorable funky tunes. From their famous balled, ” Gigalos Get Lonely too” to the dance anthem “The Bird”..The choreography was still tight and yes an assistant made sure to hold up a mirror so Morris could check out his profile.

Kool and The Gang came on next. Their history is richer than most casual fans could ever guess. Robert “Kool” Bell founded the group when he was 13 years old !
They started out as an instrumental band that had a huge hit with the now iconic song, ” Summer Madness” 1974. Their famous extensive horn section was highlighted during the show. Their hits span over 4 decades. They have had #1 hits on the pop and R&B Charts. “Hollywood Swingin” kicked off their energetic set. Crowds favorites were ” Joanna”, which many couples stood up and slow danced to. “celebrate” brought the crowd to a fever pitch.

Here a few pics from my Funk-tastic night in the Capital City !!

#GoodMusic & #GoodTimes @RedHatAmp ‘Cameo and The SOS Band’ #Raleigh #NC #Concert RECAP

“Music is moonlight in the gloomy night of life” ~ George Santayana

With all the gloominess that is being felt in the world, it was nice to be unified last night by MUSIC. SobeSavvy.com joined live music lovers from Raleigh, Durham, and surrounding areas, to witness two legends of R&B and funk: Cameo and The SOS Band with special guest The Gravedigger on July 9, 2016 at The Red Hat Amphitheater !

Cameo, known for their funky musical style and in-your  face,  cutting-edge stage performances, took us on a stroll down memory lane. Led by their original frontman and lead singer Larry Blackmon, wearing his now iconic red cup, took us down memory lane while “Hangin’ Downtown” Raleigh, bringing us their hits like “Candy”, “Word Up!”, “Single Life” and much more. Here they are performing one of my faves, “Back and Forth” ! https://www.instagram.com/p/BHsK7H4DkC5/

Founded in 1974 as New York City Players, they had to change the name because of a conflict with the funk bank named The Ohio Players, they became Cameo. This group has stood the test of time the way few bands have. In the fickle business that music has always been, Cameo has pushed the envelope ,not only musically but visually. Their stunning music videos in 1980’s and 90’s are still examples of the best video artistry of their time. They did not dissapoint !!

Getting the party started, The S.O.S Band took the stage performing classic hit after hit songs like “Take Your Time (Do It Right)”, “Just Be Good To Me” , and “Weekend Girl”. The band thanked the crowd for being apart of their musical journey for the past 37 years! That truly proves good music is timeless!  Here is a video clip of them singing one of their many smash hits “Tell Me If You Still Care” ! https://www.instagram.com/p/BHqRL1Xh01r/

..and the crowd singing and dancing along to “No One’s Gonna Love You” https://www.instagram.com/p/BHqTe5YDcXk/

In my opinion Red Hat is one of the best venues we have in the Triangle! The lawn is small but it’s way close to the stage, you can see all the performers no problem! To stay in the loop of who is “Bringin’ the get down to Downtown Raleigh” be sure to follow on Twitter @RedHatAmp / Instagram @redhatamphitheater / Facebook https://www.facebook.com/RedHatAmphitheater/

The Revolutionary @KirkFranklin comes to @DPAC ’20 Years in One Night World Tour’ ~#gospelmusic #concert #soNCSavvy

KIRK FRANKLIN…20 Years in One Night World Tour..was truly an amazing show full of energy and testimony!

For nearly two decades, Kirk Franklin has been one of the most prominent voices in gospel music.  His unique way of combining hip-hop, pop, R&B, and gospel has garnered him fans across multiple genres as well as critical acclaim.  That’s why I could not miss the opportunity to see him when he came to DPAC on Saturday, June 4, 2016.

“Kirk Franklin has been at the forefront of modern gospel music for decades now,” said Candice Terrell, Assistant Director of Marketing, Concerts & Comedy.  “His fans will get to experience Kirk in our intimate setting with DPAC’s amazing acoustics as part of The 20 Years in One Night Tour.”

Kirk Franklin has been a multi-platinum-selling purveyor of majestic fusions of gospel and contemporary music. His music has resulted in albums that consistently top both Billboard’s Gospel and Christian charts, as well as ascend into the Top 10 of the R&B/Hip Hop chart.

His unprecedented penetration into the mainstream has fortified him to also become a New York Times bestseller author for The Blueprint: A Plan for Living Above Life’s Storms. Franklin is also the host and executive producer of the gospel talent show “Sunday Best,” the highest-rated gospel program in BET network history now heading into its fourth season.

To date, Kirk has garnered nine GrammyÂź Awards; an American Music Award; 39 Stellar Awards: 16 Dove Awards (CCM); eight NAACP Image Awards; two BET Music Awards, a Soul Train Award and numerous others.

Last night he told the sold out crowd that ever since he was a little boy he knew he wanted to make gospel music that would make people dance. He has made a career of successfully combining “the music he likes with the God he loves”! Tonight when the house lights came up , a gospel rockstar came on. Kirk Franklin has a spirit and energy that is unmatched. He danced and he pranced. Along with a wonderful band and background singing ensemble, Kirk did a plethora of his old and new hits.
He lead the audience in song and sometimes in prayer. This concert can only be described as an enjoyable experience. Part church, part concert… all love!

Miami, Florida… Welcome to The Formation Tour http://share.glide.me/lovely/o633iv9i

On April 27, THE FORMATION WORLD TOUR kicked off its North American concert leg in Miami, Florida at Marlins Park to a sold out stadium. Following her release of her visual album Lemonade, BEYONCÉ wowed fans in Miami by performing 35 songs featuring her hits both old and new. THE FORMATION WORLD TOUR, promoted by Live Nation, presented by American Express and produced by Parkwood Entertainment is the most visually creative concert I have ever seen.

That visual album may be a poetic musical tribute to the strength and spiritual power of the black woman but people of all ages, shades and sexuality categories filled the stadium.
Beyhive members came dressed in all black, or donned lemon yellow outfits. Some even wore IVY PARK apparel, the new activewear brand co-founded by Beyoncé.

THE FORMATION WORLD TOUR is BEYONCÉ’s first solo tour since her ambitious Mrs. Carter Show World Tour in 2013. The sold-out tour spanning two years and five continents thrilled nearly two million fans and was hailed by critics worldwide. During the summer of 2014, BEYONCÉ and JAY Z launched the six-week ON THE RUN Tour (if you missed my review of that amazing tour, see here), playing major stadiums in the US. They ended the tour in Paris, France in September 2014 with two additional dates that were filmed for an HBO Special that was nominated for an Emmy Award.

DJ Khaled along with surprise performances by Lil Wayne, Future, Rick Ross, Yo gotti , 2chainz and Miami’s own Trick Daddy warmed up a crowd that needed no warming up. They were here to see their Queen. The energy was palpable. Anticipation was high. As she appeared center stage on what I think has to be the most massive tour set ever created the crowd lost their collective minds.

For those of you planning to go to The Formation World Tour, here is a bit of what you will experience:
image
Miami, Florida. (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Parkwood Entertainment)

Beyonce and her dancers get in “Formation” …I promise you won’t be “Sorry” ! The performances are “Flawless” !

You will be reminded who “Run the World”, why Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter is a global icon and a favorite artist to many ( at least she is “Mine”) and that dancing to “Baby Boy” is good for the soul!
image
Miami, Florida. (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Parkwood Entertainment)

“Hold Up”..I know many of you have started a “Countdown” to when Queen B comes to your town so I am keeping the specific details of the tour between “Me, Myself and I”. That way there are no spoilers “Runnin’” thru your mind “All Night”.

“Don’t Hurt Yourself” or “Ring the Alarm” when you bear witness to Beyonce being a “Naughty Girl” live in concert.
She is indeed an “Independent Woman”, a “Diva” who proudly announces when she is “Feeling Myself”.
image
Miami, Florida. (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Parkwood Entertainment)

“Yonce” continues to go thru her repetoire of hits such as “7/11” ,
“Drunk in Love” ,“Rocket”, “Daddy Lessons”. She invited 2 women up on the stage to perform “Single Ladies” alongside her. The crowd went “Crazy in Love” for all the “Bootylicious” dance moves!
image
Miami, Florida. (Photo by Frank Micelotta/Parkwood Entertainment)

Miami heat continued to rise during her red hot performances of “Naughty Girl”
, “Party”, “Blow”, “Nasty Girl”,
“Sweet Dreams /Beautiful Nightmare”.
The audience was given the opportunity to pay tribute to Prince while singing along to “Purple Rain”. With lighters, well cell phones in the air, people were singing and swaying side to side under the purple glow of love. That is what music does. It unifies people. That is what Beyonce wants for us all to get in Formation and love one another.

The final set is where we in attendance got to witness a miracle.( ok, I guess I will give one spoiler). Some say Jesus walked on water, well Beyonce danced on it while singing “Freedom” , “Survivor” (Destiny’s Child member Michelle Williams was there sitting nearby in the beehive) ,“End of Time, “Grown Woman” and “Halo”.
Her set list really showcased all her vocal talents and amazing choreography.
image

Beyonce thank you for allowing us to be apart of your dream. You shared that as a little girl you wanted to entertain and sell out stadiums. Well you are doing that and more while still remaining humble. You have not only stopped the world, you are changing the world thru your art. This tour is one not to be missed! On Saturday November 7, 2015 The Godmother of Soul..PATTI LABELLE, a Two-time GrammyÂź Award-winning singer, New York Times bestselling author, and three-time EmmyÂź Award-nominated actress returned to Durham, NC after her last performance at DPAC in 2014 sold out quickly! Known for bringing her heart, soul and songs to the stage, Ms.Say My Name ” Patti Patti” did not disappoint her fans at DPAC Durham Performing Arts Center. Her stage was fit for the royalty for which she is. There was fresh flowers by the piano, an assortment of high heels and a chaise lounge as seen here .

“It’s our extreme pleasure to bring the one and only Patti Labelle back to the DPAC stage”, says DOME Group CEO Sulaiman Mausi.  “She is a beloved icon who just has a special intimate way of connecting with her audiences and this show will be no exception!”

The word beautiful simply does not describe the incomparable force known to the world as Patti LaBelle. The soulful songbird’s name has become synonymous with grace, style, elegance and class. She is known for belting out classic rhythm and blues renditions, pop standards and spiritual sonnets. Patti is revered for her unique versatility and vocal range.

At 71 years young, she holds command of the stage, STILL. Her performance thrills with a voice that sends chills up and down the spine EVERYTIME! As heard here singing, “If Only You Knew”
https://instagram.com/p/9znztUiXK4/

She reminded her audience ” to not get it twisted” ,  she’s still got it and with quite a few songs, she did it First. Alot of fun moments during the show, such as bringing male audience members on stage…black, white, gay straight.. to sing Lady Marmalade with her. In this video, a fan not only got some impromptu singing lessons but a chance to dance  with Ms. LaBelle, a former Dancing With Stars star!
https://instagram.com/p/9zvar7iXH1/

In addition to her amazing career, which has spanned over 51 yrs, as an entertainer and entrepreneurial success, Ms. LaBelle’s work as a humanitarian is just as legendary.  While Ms. LaBelle’s celebrated career is respected world-wide, she has also endured and survived personal strife. Within a 10-year period, she lost her mother, three sisters and best friend to diabetes and cancer. She paid homage to her celebrity friends as well as family who are now resting peacefully, while singing “You Are My Friend”. It was a fitting finale to a wonderful evening at Durham Performing Arts Center

#BadBoyReunion #NCCU Homecoming Concert @Dpac #soNCsavvy Recap by #SobeSavvy .Com !

image

Durham, NC was the place to be last night as North Carolina Central University’s homecoming week heated up with The Reunion featuring Faith Evans, Mase, Total, Carl Thomas and Black Rob at DPAC !
Durham Performing Arts Center, has become the center for live entertainment in the Triangle. The concert, presented by The DOME Group L.L.C. , showcased all the favorite hits from the late 90’s, early 2000’s and even presented a special tribute to NCCU’s own Mike City.

“We’re honored to bring such an awesome tribute to the golden era of Hip-Hop and R&B,” says promoter and NCCU alum Sulaiman Mausi of The DOME Group, LLC. “This music was the soundtrack of our college days, cookouts and house parties. This night will be EPIC.”

Total opened the show and got the party started with existing members Kima Raynor, and Pamela Long.  Best known for their hits “Kissing You”, “Can’t You See” and “Trippin”, The New Jersey R&B trio made their first appearance singing the hook on The Notorious B.I.G.’s debut single, “Juicy”. Garnering attention for the new group, they were also featured on the original version of his next single “One More Chance.” Their debut single “Can‘t You See?” appeared on the soundtrack to 1995 motion picture “New Jersey Drive.” Total produced two more R&B top ten singles including “No One Else” and “Kissing You.”
https://instagram.com/p/9e3QUiCXJG/

Up next, Black Rob who appears on the Bad Boy remix “Come See Me” is most known for his smash,  “Whoa” . He was also featured on several other Bad Boy releases including remixes “What About Us” and “Love Like This”, the song  “24 Hrs. to Live”, and albums by  Puff Daddy  & the Bad Boy Family and The Notorious B.I.G.

The mood then turned to grown and sexy as Carl Thomas hit the stage! He has over 4 million records sold, 2 Grammy¼ Nominations, a couple of Soul Train nominations and S.C.L.C. Image award. With the single “I Wish” released in late 1999, Carl topped the R&B charts for six consecutive weeks, creating strong interest in his debut album, Emotional. On the strength of this single, the album was certified platinum with over 1 million in sales. He still sounds as good as ever and thanked the crowd for coming out to support Black Music. He also used his platform to remind all that #BlackLivesMatter.
https://instagram.com/p/9e8djgCXD4/

Best known as Puff Daddy’s favorite sidekick, Mase secured his place as a Bad Boy label favorite through a series of guest appearances on hit singles by other artists. By the time he issued his debut album, the Bad Boy promotional machine had effectively already made him a star. His flow was slow and relaxed, and his raps often unabashedly simple, which helped make him especially popular with the younger segment of Puff Daddy’s pop-rap audience. Just before the release of his second album, he announced his retirement from rap to pursue a career in the ministry.
https://instagram.com/p/9fBkEdCXN1/

The show’s headliner,  Faith RenĂ©e Evans is a multi-platinum GrammyÂź Award-winning recording artist, songwriter, arranger and record producer. With a music career spanning over two decades, Faith has released eight studio albums, with over 18 million albums sold and spawning over 30 singles. Faith has also performed on 20+ soundtracks and appeared at a host of guest appearances during her career. Faith Evans is a seven-time GrammyÂź nominee, winning “Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group” in 1998 for “I’ll Be Missing You,” an homage to her late husband and hip-hop legend Notorious B.I.G.

Faith Evans also invited her fans, also known as “Faithfuls” to sing along and join her on stage for her final song!  We all had a good time going back down memory lane and jamming to some of out favorite hits. Good music is indeed timeless and the Bad Boy Reunion proved just that !

#Concert Recap: #SobeSavvy Rocks Out @KatyPerry Prismatic World Tour @thebbtcenter Courtesy of @TanduayUSA!

untitled

I had the pleasure of attending Pop superstar Katy Perry’s ” Prismatic” world tour on it’s stop here in South Florida. It was held at the BB&T Center in Sunrise. I have been a fan of Katy since 2008’s hit ” I Kissed A Girl”. Some may have thought she was a flash in the pop music pan, but she has defied the odds and established herself as a genuine tour de force of an artist. Her hits are too numerous to list but luckily her set list had the majority. The show was part broadway, part circus and all wonderful. The throngs of Katy Kat tweens, teens and older fans in attendance gleefully sang along and rocked to every lyric verbatim. Without giving away too much info for fans who have yet to experience the tour, let’s just say they will see everything from light up jump ropes to incredible aerial acrobatics to a REAL live human horse. Since the prism shape was the theme, it showed up in various ways. The show was a feast for the eyes and Perry’s vocals were an elixar for the ears. She had 8 different outfit changes and just as many different on stage themes. She is on tour in North America through 10/10/15 .
