#OutandAboutAva ‘s First #Circus ! @RinglingBros #RinglingBros presents Legends! #Miami @AAarena Recap by #SobeSavvy.com

Ringling-Bros-Legends-Tickets

Growing up my dad worked at our local performance arena in Baltimore, Md. I was privy to be present at various concerts, rodeos and events that came to town. There was only one show that I awaited year after year after year. ” THE greatest show on earth” was the one for me. He used to take my brothers and I downtown the day of the opening so we could watch the elephants eat their lunch on the city square. The lunch was what seemed to be tons and tons of cabbage and lettuce. That night we witnessed the magic that only the Ringling Bros could create. Tigers in the cages with trainers. Motorcycles racing almost into each other in the metal sphere. Tight rope walkers and clowns. Pretzels and sno cones. While you only get a chance to be a kid once, having your own 3.5 yr old is to witness snapshots of your own life. And yesterday was one of those snapshots. Her first trip to the circus. THE only circus that mattered in my childhood.

We arrived at the AAA Arena in Miami a bit early for the 3pm show and were treated to an all access preview where our little one could see some of the animals up close and interact with some performers. Once the show began in earnest it was a non stop plethora of fun. So much going on at once. It was great that all of this head turning
is kept in check by ringmaster Johnathan Lee Iverson, Ringling’s first African-American ringmaster. How he managed to keep such a high energy level throughout the show is beyond understanding. His outfits had more sequins than I have ever seen. I am happy to report that all of my childhood favorites were there. Upgraded even. The music was contemporary pop with some classic circus tunes mixed in.

Alexander Lacey, the current Lion/Tiger tamer kept the spirit of the iconic Gunther Gebel Williams alive. Their ” Globe of Steel” motorcycles zoomed around in the ball. Each rider just inches from the others. Clowns and even acrobats in glass spheres from the ceiling. So many more acts and surprises are entertwined throughout the afternoon. The circus is all about wonder for kids and those who are kids at heart. The length of roughly 2.5 hrs is just enough for the kids before they get too restless. My little one lunched on caramel pretzels and a snow cone in a special clown mug. Just like I did. Sometimes yesterday comes alive. Thanks to the Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus that day was today.

GET YOUR TICKETS NOW. The Greatest Show On Earth is here in Miami until January 19, 2015

Books and Family Fun with #OutandAboutAva @MiamiBookFair #MBFI31 #GenGenius ~Recap by #SobeSavvy!

image

Every year in November, Bookworms unite at The Miami Book Fair International Presented by The Center for Literature and Theater at Miami Dade College. It is the nation’s largest literary event and we have made it a family tradition to go every year !

The mission of Miami Book Fair International is to promote reading, encourage writing, and heighten an awareness of literacy and the literary arts in our multi-ethnic community.

This year, we focused on the fabulous children’s program with our 3 year old Ava. She loves books and we wanted to share our perspective of the fair thru her eyes as well as ours. We picked up a guide at our local Starbucks and planned for our day at the book fair.

We attended the Street Fair on Saturday , Nov. 22, 2014. The weather was not the usual sunny day Miamians enjoy, however that did not stop us or others from enjoying the fair. There were plenty of activities for the kids to enjoy at the Generation Genius Children’s Alley. Puppets, music, dancing, author readings, face painting, photo booths, games and book shopping are just some of the tons of things available to do for kids of all ages!

We met a local Mom/Teacher and Author named Leneen Faith. She has set out to make learning and caring fun with a child’s book series: Peacebe and the Heartwatch. Ava was attracted to the illustrations, which we learned are done by the author’s brother David Cambell. Each book corresponds to a different character trait and we picked the one about helping around the house, called Peacebe’s Messy Room. Find out more at http://www.peacebekids.com and follow http://www.facebook.com/peacebekids

Family Fun with #OutandAboutAva @ChelseaPiersNYC @HudsonRiverPark #Pier62Carousel-Recap by #SobeSavvy!

image

There is no time better to visit NYC than in the summertime. Those of us with kids seek out the best things to keep their fun quotient at a steady high. The Chelsea Piers fits the bill. Located by the West side highway, the Chelsea Piers has a variety of activities including gymnastics, soccer, basketball and batting cages.

image

image

image

image

Our 3 yr old however is still too young to partake in those activities so what is one to do ? CAROUSEL !! Walk along a meandering path pass the pretzel stand and you will find the Carousel at Pier 62. Pier 62 Carousel http:// pier62carousel.com/
is the centerpiece of Hudson River Park’s new open space at Pier 62 in New York City.

This signature 36 ft carousel has been created using 33 hand-carved wood figures of Hudson River Valley animals and one chariot, allowing for up to 36 passengers, per ride. The carousel building has been designed with a green roof and opens out to a large sprawling lawn and tree-lined pathways. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Fernando Rosario, who explained that the hand carved wood animals represent native NY species in their environment. Instead of playing traditional merry go round tunes he opts to play current pop  top 40 hits. He has received positive feedback from his patrons in regards to his musical choices. Location and customer service makes this the perfect place to hold a birthday party !

image

image

image

image

For only $2 per ride (One supervising adult accompanying a child under 42 inches may ride for free), it is a must do for family fun in NYC. Your child (or your inner child) will thank you! I highly recommend a spin on the whimsical Butterfly Unicorn!

#OutandAboutAva Reviews Kid Menu @Yardhouse #MiamiBeach ~ Recap by #SobeSavvy !

image1

“I’m Hungry” says Ava, my 2.5 yr old daughter yesterday. I respond, ” Let’s go to Yardhouse for lunch “. When people think Yardhouse they think of great food and even greater beer choices but Yardhouse Miami Beach has just introduced their long awaited Kids menu. Yardhouse Miami Beach has been a great addition to the food scene near Lincoln Road since opening a few months ago. Locals now have a place to eat and drink for a reasonable cost. Their kids menu didn’t dissapoint either. It had a few of the standby choices for kids such as fried chicken strips or hot dogs. The interesting part of their menu though showed a level of trust and sophistication they assume kids today with their global palettes would like.

After all, kids and food is the ultimate truth test. If a kid doesn’t like a food it becomes obvious in the first bite, smell or visual cue. Yardhouse offers whole grain spaghetti w/turkey meatballs. Korean BBQ Beef made with short ribs or maybe try the egg noodles with butter. Maybe try the BBQ Chicken Pizza. These choices are not found in the normal drive thru fast food spots.

She loved the spaghetti and turkey meatballs. It was a generous portion of adult quality food. It came with steamed broccoli and a strawberry lemonade. When she looked up with red stained lips and mouth, I asked her how is it. She responded with two thumbs up. It was a success.

Next time the kids are hungry, make a beeline to Yardhouse. For kid’s sake.

Venus Step Up & Out ! Miami Tour Stop June 11, 2013

I attended my first free glam event with my daughter Ava (www.outandaboutAva.blogspot.com , #outandaboutAva) and it was so much fun!

The event was held at the 1111 Lincoln Rd building on the 7th floor, which offers panoramic views of South Beach. Upon arrival, we were greeted and offered a chance to Step Up and take the spotlight!

The best part? For every woman who took part, a donation was made to Step Up Women’s Network,a national, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to connecting and advancing women and girls. ( http://www.suwn.org)

First, I was shown a rack of gorgeous dresses from Rent the Runway (http://www.renttherunway.com/), a membership-based website that rents high-end designer apparel and accessories on a 4- or 8-day basis.  I selected a flirty Shoshanna white eyelet dress (http://www.renttherunway.com/shop/designers/shoshanna_dresses/meantbedress) because it complimented my daughter’s white eyelet/blue floral dress!

Next, we got glammed up with shoes and accessories. My daughter loved the necklace that was chosen for her and I was happy that there was an assortment of clip on earring options as I do not have pierced ears. A beauty bar was available to touch up hair & makeup before walking the Venus Blue Carpet for the paparazzi.

Finally, it was time to Step Up and Step Out! We were briefly interviewed before a fashion photographer captured our Mommy and Me Goddess moment. Ava said “Hola” to everyone (very apropo for Miami )  then proceeded to walk, then run on the blue carpet ! She heard “runway” and thought she was supposed to run away! LOL. All attendees received a swag bag with a choice of  three different Gillette Venus razors.

We both enjoyed strutting our stuff for charity and encourage you to #StepUp to the conversation. Tweet with the #StepUp hashtag even if you did not attend the event, and Gillette will donate $1 to the Step Up Women’s Network. Follow @GilletteVenus or check them out atwww.twitter.com/gillettevenus.

Hope you enjoy these pictures from the event !
