In the heart of Lincoln Road sits a place that tourists and locals alike have been frequenting for over a decade. That place is Maya Tapas and Grill

http://mayatapasandgrill.com

You can have breakfast brunch/lunch or dinner. Their superb service and attention to detail is what sets them apart from the other tourist traps on Lincoln Road. This past Sunday the family and I decided to try their breakfast. We were seated promptly and given a choice of seats. Being late summer we chose a seat underneath one of their many giant fans they use to keep the heat at bay. We asked our waiter what are the most popular dishes on their breakfast menu. He advised their sausage omelette was great as was their eggs benedict made w/smoked salmon. Our little one opted for their fruit salad. Our refreshing mimosa and bellini kept us company while waiting for our meal. My daughter even took a quick visit to the art gallery on Lincoln Road opposite Maya’s. In prompt fashion our food came. Along with cranberry and peach juice. Peach juice is very hard to find in a restaurant and it was delicious. Everything was well prepared and quite good. The fruit salad was uber fresh and looked like a work of art , albeit a disappearing work of art !!

We all were all fueled up and raring to go attack the shops after our meal. Looking for a breakfast that has quality and a reasonable price with great service to boot ? Check out Maya. Tell em SobeSavvy.com sent ya

#SobeSavvy #FamilyFun @Ripleys #RipleysBelieveItOrNotKeyWest

IMG_1464

This past labor day hubby and I packed up the car and our 3 yr old and headed to Key West,Fl for some fun. While Key West may have it’s share of odd and colorful characters none can match what is found at 108 Duval Street. That is the home of Ripley’s Believe It or Not ! http://www.ripleys.com/keywest/

According to their literature, this location houses over 550 strange and unusual artifacts, exhibits and optical illusions on two floors.

Robert Ripley was an artist who was obsessed with traveling the globe. In 1920 he made his first trek across Europe. In 1925 he visitied the Orient and was fascinated with the Chinese and their culture. Visitors here will definitely feel and see his Asian interests. He was called the modern day Marco Polo. He was always in search of the unknown and the unbelievable. He brought back all sorts of items which are on display here.

We enjoyed too many of the exhibits to name. Our little one was able to manipulate some of their kids size exhibits ,so that made our visit even more special. Some of our highlights were The Bridle Collar, the toilet paper wedding gown and the worlds oldest mother. The lobby floor has various tiles with factoids on them, so don’t forget to look up and down during your visit. This attraction is open 365 days a year. Even on Christmas and New Years. Believe it or Not !

To see various clips of how some of their exhibits are manufactured and also theme days at different locations around the country check out their YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/RipleyWorld

What’s #BetterThanSex ?! #SobeSavvy Travels to #KeyWest to find out! @BetterThanSexKW #Dessert #Restaurant

bs

The place is called “Better Than Sex”.http://www.betterthansexkeywest.com/ With a name like that the bar has been set pretty high! It is a A dessert restaurant. That is correct. A restaurant where ALL THEY SERVE IS DESSERT! My kind of place. We entered through a candle lit doorway into a new kind of experience. Erotica adorns the ruby walls. The main room is darkened. The mood they are setting is obvious. They have two main dining areas; the red room and the gold room. We were seated at a table with a sheer curtain that can be drawn for some privacy. The menus are on tablet computers. Guests can pick drinks which are rimmed with all sorts of goodness like chocolate or caramel. Wines, coffee or beer can be rimmed with whatever you choose. You can come up with your own unique concoction. We tried the ” Kiss Me Carolyn” which is Ayala Champagne in a Caramel Brulee’d Rimmed Wine Glass. It was a perfect pairing. The champagne and caramel truly complimented each other. Everyone has to come up with their own methodology in how to drink/taste their beverage. I went with 2 sips and one lick. You come up with your own ! We also had the “Tia Ticker”, which is Piper Rose Champagne in a White Chocolate Rimmed Wine Glass .

Next up were the dessert choices…Started with the “Chocolate Grilled Cheese”…not exactly a “normal” combination of foods but it was exquisitely deliciously and uber sinful. Next up was their namesake dessert. It is their version of chocolate bread pudding with a side of white chocolate mousse. Awesome chocolate goodness that melted in my mouth. Was this dish better than sex? Only YOU can decide that. Also the “Missionary Crisp ” is not to be missed. If you like apple cobbler you will LOVE this variation.

Between the decor, vibe and the incredible drinks and desserts I left there feeling good and in the mood for _ _ _.See if you feel the same. Next time you are in Key West make sure you have something that just might be Better Than Sex. Tell em Sobesavvy.com sent ya.

#SobeSavvy Presents #thePowerofHappyHour! Vol 6 @IceBoxCafe #southbeach #miami #happyhour

IMG_1297

Last week prior to dusk I visited a new happy hour being hosted by an old friend. That friend would be Icebox Cafe on Purdy Ave in South Beach.http://iceboxcafe.com/ I have been a big fan of this place for years at their old location off of Lincoln Road. I love their relatively new location even more. One thing they never had at either was a happy hour. That has recently changed. Happy hour usually means microwaved frozen wings and cheap beer. Not so at Icebox Cafe. For a restaurant named “ICEBOX” I was dumbfounded when Debbie the manager advised me that “we do not even have an actual freezer in our restaurant”. Everything that comes out of their kitchen is FRESH NOT FROZEN..ever. What an interesting repudiation of their name ! In the processed frozen food world we now live in, this is a refreshing change.

Their happy hour menu is drawn and sourced from their actual mainline menu. Happy hour can be enjoyed inside their decidedly beautiful Martha’s Vineyard-ish decorated interior at the bar or outside at one of the high top tables. We tried the Mini Mushroom Sopes and the Homemade Flatbread with Chicken. Both were top notch examples of how happy hour food can be creative and delicious when a restaurant decides taste and quality trump cheap ingredients for a higher profit margin. The veggie potstickers were also delicious. What can one choose as the side lubricant to all of this good food ? How about one of their many hand crafted cocktails for $7. No plastic bottles of syrup mixers either. The “chocolate delight” martini is a chocolate lovers dream come true. The “Cosmo Not” is their creative take on the old standby Cosmopolitan. Only better since they use my favorite high end liqueur, St Germain as one of the ingredients. They also have 2-4-1 well cocktails and draft beers. Debbie also had me try something not on the happy hour menu but is a bit of a bar secret. Homemade Limoncello. Made with fresh lemon juice on the premises. It tasted like lemon sunshine. The Cucumber Margarita was exquisite. Perfect balance of Tequilla, Triple Sec and fresh lime juice.

If you’re looking for a slushy drink out of a machine with a white handle than hit Ocean Drive. Do you want a laid back happy hour with a sophisticated vibe with hand crafted drinks and food ? Icebox Cafe is your new happy hour friend. They will also be opening up a new outpost in South Florida in the not so distant future. Stay tuned and keep your eyes/ears open . You don’t want to miss it. Cheers !

Oh, by the way. You cannot leave Icebox Cafe without a slice of one of their iconic cakes or bakery item. I decided on the most famous of them all. The Chocolate Delight. Take a look at the last picture. It is truly worth a MILLION words !

#SobeSavvy Presents #BeachyBrunches ! Vol 5: Terrazza @ShoreClubSoBe #Brunch

IMG_1207

Brunch — a combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning but it can extend to as late as 3PM on Sundays. The word is a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch.

Terrazza restaurant at the Shore Club challenges many assumptions about brunch.https://www.morganshotelgroup.com/originals/originals-shore-club-south-beach/eat-drink/terrazza

Ending at 4pm is just one of them. South Beach being South Beach means a good portion of their denizens think anything prior to 1pm on a Sunday is just too early, hence the 4pm end time.

My family and I arrived shortly after they opened at 11am. We were seated at their airy spacious patio adjacent to their gorgeous pool. Numerous celing fans kept the oppressive Miami heat at bay.The patio space’s simplicity added to the calm sophistication of the setting. We had high hopes that the food and drink matched the terrific ambiance. It didn’t. It exceeded it. Terraza has decided to take the normal eggs and waffles brunch to a level that I have never encountered before. You have your standard brunch fare for their guests who require the familiar. What they also have in addition can only be described as a brunch tour de force.Let’s talk food first. Made to order pasta station and omelette station are present. Various toppings/fillings are available. No need to wait in a line whilst holding your plate like a manilla folder. You can place your omelette or pasta order with your waiter who will have it made and bring it to your table. Whilst awaiting an omelette I would recommend you try one of the many many tapas plates. Every Sunday the executive chef changes up the tapas choices to keep things interesting and inventive. This Sunday I tried the grilled salmon on a bed of roasted corn and lima beans. I also tried the crispy fish and calamari salad. We also devoured their burger and also had a mini slider. I wanted to try the roasted eggplant and two different types of sausage but just didn’t have the room ! My daughter loved the brioche french toast with fresh strawberries and bananas and tore into the lemon ricotta pancakes. The Antipasto and shrimp cocktail choices sat next to the custom self serve Bloody Mary station. Did I mention their Bloody Mary’s yet ?

They also have what can be only be described as the worlds best custom made self serve bloody mary station. You start with your choice of 3 different bloody mary foundations. V-8 , straight fresh tomato juice or clamato juice. Now the fun begins. They have endless choices to fill, spice and garnish your drink in any way shape or form you choose. From smoked applewood bacon slices to pickled asparagus or quail eggs and numerous pickled or peppered olive choices. You can make it as hot or mild as you like also. From celery seed, paprika, old bay, imported Thai Spice or cayenne pepper to name a few. Terrazo’s F & B manager, Eduardo Hernandez was gracious enough to walk me through the myriad of choices.

Terrazza has coined their brunch as a “Ladies Who Brunch”. Besides all the of delectable items on their buffet, women also get bottomless mimosas , bellinis and this week they also had sangria {white and red}. Our glasses were never empty longer than 45 seconds. Service was attentive and efficient without being intrusive. I asked Eduardo, “why a lack of signage on the tapas for their vast buffet ?” He responded, ” we decided to forgo the little signs on the food because we want to encourage our guests to interact with the line cooks with questions about the dish so they may occasionally learn something that they might not have if we had the signs on the dishes”

We ended our brunch journey at the dessert station with chocolate covered strawberries and scrumptious cheesecake bites. I’ll try the croissant au chocolate next time. Need a breezy easy Sunday brunch ? Look no further . Go to Terrazza at The Shore Club. You will be swept off your feet.

Ladies Brunch is $44 inclusive of bottomless mimosas , bellinis, and Sangria . Gentlemen pay a $20 upcharge.

Family Fun with #OutandAboutAva @ChelseaPiersNYC @HudsonRiverPark #Pier62Carousel-Recap by #SobeSavvy!

image

There is no time better to visit NYC than in the summertime. Those of us with kids seek out the best things to keep their fun quotient at a steady high. The Chelsea Piers fits the bill. Located by the West side highway, the Chelsea Piers has a variety of activities including gymnastics, soccer, basketball and batting cages.

image

image

image

image

Our 3 yr old however is still too young to partake in those activities so what is one to do ? CAROUSEL !! Walk along a meandering path pass the pretzel stand and you will find the Carousel at Pier 62. Pier 62 Carousel http:// pier62carousel.com/
is the centerpiece of Hudson River Park’s new open space at Pier 62 in New York City.

This signature 36 ft carousel has been created using 33 hand-carved wood figures of Hudson River Valley animals and one chariot, allowing for up to 36 passengers, per ride. The carousel building has been designed with a green roof and opens out to a large sprawling lawn and tree-lined pathways. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Fernando Rosario, who explained that the hand carved wood animals represent native NY species in their environment. Instead of playing traditional merry go round tunes he opts to play current pop  top 40 hits. He has received positive feedback from his patrons in regards to his musical choices. Location and customer service makes this the perfect place to hold a birthday party !

image

image

image

image

For only $2 per ride (One supervising adult accompanying a child under 42 inches may ride for free), it is a must do for family fun in NYC. Your child (or your inner child) will thank you! I highly recommend a spin on the whimsical Butterfly Unicorn!

The Heigh Five..Five Questions for Fashion Designer @ErinRossieHealy #Trunkshow Recap by #SobeSavvy

jpeg

Who: Erin Healy’s Spring/Resort Collection “Ma Belle Femme” and new Fall/Winter Collection “Tales of a Gypsy”

What: Private Trunk Show

When: July 16th, 2014 5pm – 9pm

Where: The W Hotel 2201 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, FL‎

On July 16, guests were cordially invited to attend a private trunk show and sample sale featuring pieces from the Spring/Resort Collection “Ma Belle Femme” and new Fall/Winter Collection “Tales of a Gypsy.”

This event took place at The W Hotel in South Miami Beach. Guests were greeted in the lobby and escorted to the residence for an evening of fashion and the opening of Mercedes Benz Swim Week!
Champagne, wine and light hors d’ oeuvres were served.

Barry H. of SobeSavvy.com had the opportunity to interview Erin Healy during this intimate event.

BH: So Erin, tell me where you get inspiration for your designs ?

EH: My inspiration comes from all different places and forms. My last collection which was all black came to me when I was meditating. Sometimes I get inspiration from a particular fabric or sometimes they can come to me in dreams.

BH: I see that black is a major theme in some of your designs. Living in Florida how does the color black fit into your designs ?

EH: Black is classic and will always be in style.

BH: Which designs do you prefer formal or casual wear ?

EH: In the past I have always done very cocktail or formal wear but some of my pieces you could dress down but ultimately I am geared more towards red carpet design fashion.

BH: What is the typical Erin Healy customer?

EH : My woman is between ages of 28-55. A body conscious woman who is interested in unique limited edition pieces that you will not see everywhere. I am not in dept stores. I focus on specialty small clothing boutiques.

BH: Often newer designers fail because they attempt to expand too far and too fast. What is your end game as far as geographic expansion ?

EH:I am focused on the south. There are certain regions where I beleive my clothes sell better. You have to be smart about it. This is a business. At the moment the Southeast and some of California is my main region.

#SobeSavvy Recaps #OnTheRunTour @Beyonce #JayZ #OTR #OnTheRunBmore #Baltimore

OTR_TourOTR_Tour

On The Run is defined as hurrying from place to place. As in “she’s always on the run”. Well when presented with the opportunity to review the concert of the summer, I definitely hurried from Miami to my hometown of Baltimore to see The Carters for their first co-headlining stadium tour together : On The Run Tour http://www.beyonce.com/tour

The tour name spins off from the song “Part II (On the Run)” from Jay-Z’s album Magna Carta Holy Grail in which Beyoncé features. It also follows the criminal ‘on the lam’ narrative found in the couples’ 2002 first single together, “’03 Bonnie & Clyde” . I think everyone realized it would be a crime not to check out this tour, especially after viewing the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNcJg5svv9A

Upon arriving inside the stadium, there was a message on the screen from J+B that read: “This Is Not Real Life”.They are not “On the Run” literally trying to avoid being captured. Indeed, I feel we are the ones captured and being invited to run with them, to escape, to join them on a retreat focusing on their art thru music. I had on my Converse/Chucks and was ready to dance, run, sing/rap and have fun!

20140707_194237

7/7/14 proved to be my lucky day as well as other fans who came out to show love to the Power Couple. While waiting for the show to start, I captured some Beyonce’s fans aka members of The BeyHive , who were ready in their custom made concert wear in support for King Bey !

20140707_202325

20140707_202341

As the sun set over downtown Baltimore, it was time. They came out to a welcoming roar that only one could hear in a stadium setting. Beyonce was giving us Sasha Fierce , Yonce , Peaches and whatever other names she go by the entire night. She was on ! The ultimate performer. Voice? Flawless. Wardrobe? Flawless
Choreography? Flawless.

Jay-Z had the kind of swag that one would expect from the Emperor of Hip Hop. Jigga was in top notch form. He had the crowd rapping verbatim to all of his biggest hits. Fun stuff indeed. His catalogue of music in the genre is unmatched. His reign is far from over.

The decades-spanning set list (http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/beyonce-and-jay-z/2014/m-and-t-bank-stadium-baltimore-md-5bc1eb40.html) of 43 hit songs along with highly stylized vignettes and dazzling dance numbers, kept us all entertained for 2 plus hours. I appreciated the balance of Beyonce and Jay Z songs. They both have a wealth of hits and solo juggernauts in their own right.

Beyonce also surprised us by covering Lauren Hill’s “Ex -Factor”. It was a wonderful rendition and honored the original.

The interaction between the two seemed genuine. They were having fun being Forever Young! Unexpected celebrity cameos appeared on “Big Pimpin” and celebrity mugshots on “Izzo”

Ringling Bros no longer has the greatest show on earth. Jay and Bey do. A night to remember.

#SobeSavvy Presents #thePowerofHappyHour! Vol 4 @SemillaMiami #southbeach #miami

IMG_0313

Last Friday my friend and I wanted to do a local happy hour here on the beach. We wanted a happy hour away from any touristy area while enjoying some good bites and libations. We both have been wanting to try Semilla at 1330 Alton Rd Miami Beach, Fl 33139. http://semillamiami.com/.

My happy hour partner and good friend who hails from Brussels was excited to sample the cuisine of the renowned French chef/owner Frederic Joulin. We were greeted warmly upon entering. The majority of tapas and drinks are a la carte at the $6 price point. There is plenty to choose from. We had some of their fresh blue point oysters, bbq rib potstickers and goat cheese croquettas. Everything was yummy and served in a pleasant friendly manner. The interior is very welcoming in a warm industrial garden-esque atmosphere. I asked the owner about the various planted herbs on a wall display . Frederic said ” I always want to use the freshest of herbs on my recipes . so what better way than to grow them all myself. I rotate them on a regular basis on the wall based on when they are ready to be cultivated for the kitchen”. How unique ! After a few cocktails and bites we ended our happy hour culinary adventure with their delicious dulce de leche profiteroles. We will be back.

Semilla’s happy hour is every day, from 6 to 8 p.m every day except Friday when it is extended until 10pm. The restaurant also offers Florida draft beers, well drinks, wines by the glass, cocktails, oysters, pot stickers, tempura, and barbecue skewers on their happy hour menu.

Now that our Miami Heat have made the Finals, Semilla is a fun place to catch a Heat game !

Check Out their Facebook page for specific themed specials like their Tuesday Ladies night .

#SobeSavvy visits @TheDali #DaliMuseum #Stpeterbsburg-Recap #Art #WarholatDali

dali_museum_st_petersburg-700x466
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marqués de Dalí de Pubol. Name ring a bell ? Do you know him ? Yes you do. He goes by Salvador Dali. A man with so much color and eccentricity could never have had a regular name. He basically invented/popularized the surrealism genre in paintings. His pieces both reveal and revolt. To love his work is to constantly agree that you know not what it is you love about it. The colors ? The lighting ? The decay ? Take your pick.

My family and I took a roadtrip to Tampa this past weekend. No visit to the Tampa Bay area is complete without an afternoon spent in the spectacular Dali Museum in St Petersburg,Fl. http://thedali.org/ Dali also dabbled in photography, film and sculptures. Painting is undoubtledly where his legacy lies. He was a showman. Sometimes his eccentric behavior came close to actually detracting from his work. The museum houses some of his most famous pieces. It also hosts various other special exhibits. The current draw is an exhibit of Andy Warhol works. The grounds and the design of the museum itself all reflect Dali’s quirkiness and fascination with spirals. The center spiral staircase is a case in point. They have a great gift shop where you can buy all sorts of items with Dali works embedded on them. The outdoor area has a oversized sculpture of that famous moustache. Out front there is a “fountain of youth “. A nice acknowledgement of that magic water Ponce De Leon searched for in Southwest Florida. There is also a tree where visitors have left thousands of entry paper/plastic wristbands affixed near a tree. An ode to his oft theme of decay. Pictures are forbidden within the galleries themselves so I captured some of the grounds and bright public spaces. What a great way to spend an afternoon. With Dali.

Enjoy the pics from our visit
