On October 18, 2017, Whiskey Kitchen hosted a private (SOLD OUT) event -‘Supper Club No.2- featuring curated selections of Japanese whisky paired with inspired dishes created by Whiskey Kitchen’s culinary team. SobeSavvy.com was there to capture the celebration and give you an inside look of Japan’s finest offerings at this wonderful event!

THE SETTING

Located in Downtown Raleigh, Whiskey Kitchen is the perfect restaurant for hosting group & private events. Guests who attended Supper Club No.2 sat in reserved seating at long communal tables, which allowed for talking and sharing dishes family-style. The table was nicely decorated and each chair had a Japanese paper fan as a keepsake!

THE WHISKY

When we arrived, we were advised to head to the bar to receive our reception cocktail which was hand-crafted and curated especially for the evening. In this video, bartendar legend Johnny Berry explains how this refreshing cocktail was made!

We all received a menu which listed the selection of whisky we would be tasting along with notes for proof, color, nose and finish. In addition to the reception cocktail, there were four types of whisky to try. My favorite was the Suntory Whisky Toki , which is a blended whisky that has hints of vanilla. I just happened to be sitting next to two reps from Beam Suntory who shared that Suntory Whisky Toki is a blend of 3 different Japanese Whiskies aged in different casks.

THE FOOD

The culinary team at Whiskey Kitchen did an excellent job at creating Japanese inspired cuisine with a southern touch. We enjoyed 8 dishes created specifically for this event, but some of them may make its way onto the permanant menu because it was that good! This was Whiskey Kitchen‘s second large scale celebration of whiskey and food and I highly recommend going to their next event. You don’t have to be a big fan of whisky to appreciate the experience with other foodies. This renowned Raleigh restaurant has already made plans to host Supper Club No. 3! I had an amazing time meeting new people, trying new things and learning about a variety of whisky from Japan. The food was really good as always with Whiskey Kitchen. You should definitely make plans to visit Downtown Raleigh and dine at this restaurant or hang at their beautiful bar, which serves not only whiskey but wine, beer and uniquely crafted cocktails! Event Recap | Sip + Savor -A Wine & Food Experience @DPAC #SipandSavor #Durham

On October 15, 2017, SobeSavvy.com was invited to join other foodies and oeneophiles at DPAC for the inaugural Sip +Savor -A Wine & Food Experience. This new food and wine event brought together North Carolina’s restaurants & culinary talents and paired them with fine wines from around the world! This was also a fundraising event to benefit Keep Durham Beautiful , a nonprofit, volunteer organization working in partnership with Durham to conserve and enhance the appearance and environment of the city/county.

Admission to this event included:

  • Food Sampling from North Carolina Restaurants and notable Chefs like Scott Howell of Nana’s, Michael Lee of  M Sushi, Bill smith of Crooks Corner, Eric Montagne of Standard Fords, Charlie Deal of JuJube, Brandon Sharp of Carolina Crossroads at the Carolina Inn, Aaron Benjamin of Gocciolona, Jim Wald of Glasshalfull, Tim Lyons of Blue Seafood and Kevin Callaghan of Acme …just to name a few!
  • A limited number of VIP Ticket holders enjoyed all elements of regular admission plus a private entrance/restrooms, exclusive VIP lounge where speciality spirits, rare beer and wine tastings were available to Imperial ticket holders only. 

With sample areas on all three levels guests never had to walk more than a few steps for their next delightful bite or sip of wine. Every varietal imagined was represented here by a winery. Most tables paired their food with the wine right next to it, which allowed for guests to engage with restaurants and wineries at the same time. We also had the opportunity to attend wine seminars and learn more about the wines being shared from the wine producers and Sommeliers. I really enjoyed how intimate and informative this event was! 

 

Not only was the event informative but I had so much fun meeting other food & wine lovers from the community who all enjoyed sharing stories about what was the favorite bite at this event and how wonderful our local culinary scene is here in the Triangle. We are so fortunate to live in North Carolina with its amazing Agriculture as well its own Wine Industry.

Before leaving, we checked out the on-stage experience inside the actual venue which is where I ran into some friends as well as dessert samples. That was the perfect sweet ending to this fantastic foodie event! It was such a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday Afternoon in the Bull City.

Recently I went to the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Expo held at the Raleigh Convention Center and had the opportunity to sample “The World’s Finest” Honey Smoked Salmon. I was not only hooked on this healthy, delicious protein but inspired to share some recipes and prepare some dishes for friends to taste and experience this amazing superfood themselves! 

Before I share the menu, recipes and feedback from my #SobeSavvyEats Lunch, let me give you THE FACTS (courtesy of Skyler Mason, owner of Honey Smoked Fish Co.) on what makes the Honey Smoked Salmon different, why you should add “the Protein of the Future” to your dishes and why fully-cooked, ready-to-eat Honey Smoked Salmon is one of the most versatile, nutritious products on the market today:

I served 3 of the 5 flavors: Original, Chipotle & Lime, and Cracked Peppers at ROOM TEMPERATURE so the salmon could soften, which brings out its natural juices and flavors from the rich moisture of the Omega-3’s! This is what stands them out from any other smoked salmon. It is also diabetic friendly, gluten free and certified kosher. Here is what the ‘Original’ flavor looks like out of its packaging:

Honey Smoked Salmon is fully cooked, lightly smoked, ready to eat & 99% boneless. No preservatives, coloring, artificial flavors ,nitrates or MSG added.

Serve this easy appetizer recipe at your next party! Because the salmon is highly concentrated in taste, a little goes a long way to flavor any dish.

In this recipe, I combined both the Original flavor of Honey Smoked Salmon and the Chipotle & Lime together to create a light, pasta dish with a hint of spice and citrus.

This is the dish that got me hooked in the first place at the expo! It is loaded with spinach, Honey Smoked Salmon, mandarin oranges, almonds, tomatoes..and more!

#FoodieFriday Spotlight on @MissShirleys | Where to Eat for Breakfast,Brunch, Lunch #Baltimore

One of the many reasons Baltimore is unique is it’s geography. Not a southern city and not a wholly northern city either. Both influence Baltimore’s culture and cuisine. To sample this split personality is to visit Miss Shirley’s Cafe. With 3 locations in the region, the locally owned Miss Shirley’s is the go to place to sample all that Baltimore cuisine has to offer. From regional classics like crab cakes to southern mainstays like fried green tomatoes, Miss Shirley’s does it all on a high casual level. Dress up or down. All are welcome here.

Miss Shirley’s has been featured on Food Networks hit show, Diners, Drive In’s and Dives, making it very popular with locals and visitors alike. Open for breakfast, brunch and lunch, the downtown Inner Harbor location was packed. They don’t take reservations, but this restaurant is well worth the wait for its delicious food, exceptional service and warm atmosphere. We chose to done at this location for lunch as it was convenient to our hotel, Hyatt Place and close to Port Discovery Children’s Museum (Read all about this attraction and more family fun places to visit in Baltimore >>here.)

THE DRINKS

I ordered a “Miss Mimosa” from their House-Made Mornin’ Cocktails list. They use freshly squeezed orange juice and mix it with champagne and garnish it with an orange and strawberry slice. It was so refreshing! Since we were in the Charm City, my husband opted for a DuckPin Pale Ale, a craft beer made in Baltimore!

THE FOOD

I’ll start with saying the menu has something for everyone and if you were wondering if this restaurant is kid-friendly it is! In fact, it was voted America’s Favorite Family Restaurant and Favorite Kids Menu.

My daughter ordered the Silver Dollar Pancakes, which were beautifully presented in a bento box ! She really enjoyed the fresh fruit and option to have brocolli with her pancakes. 

After seeing all the #ShirleysLove on Social Media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest @MissShirleys, I could not wait to try some of their signature dishes. Take a look at what we tried: 

Shirley’s Affair with Oscar is indeed a love affair on a plate. A twist on a Surf and Turf dish. If you are a meat lover and enjoy seafood, this combo will not disappoint.

My hubby devoured his Bay-O PO’ BOY with Softshell crab. His thoughts were Yum.Yum.Yum. I did not get to taste but I did get a quick photo at least! It’s served with hash browns and was a nice portion.

We took the opportunity to cast our vote for Miss Shirley’s after thoroughly enjoy our lunch!

Hey #Raleigh, Celebrate #NationalBurgerMonth #NationalBurgerDay @BurgerFi 

May is burger month so SobeSavvy.com wanted to find the best burger joint in the Triangle. A friend had been telling us about Burger Fi for quite a while so decided to see what all the fuss was about. 

We had the pleasure of being hosted by their Wake Forest Rd location in Raleigh. We entered a bright and airy burger joint with an expansive terrace with flat screens showing the sports game. We opted to sit inside. After taking a few moments to look at their menu we finally got decisive with the following orders:


I went with the Breakfast All Day Burger:


Natural Angus Burger, American Cheese, Bacon, Maple Syrup, Fried
Egg, Hash Brown, Grilled Onions, Ketchup


This.Was.Incredible. The ingredients may look a little weird on paper but this went together so well. The hash browns and fried egg just melded
perfectly with my burger. The maple syrup was just enough sweetness to complete this burger of perfection.


Hubby chose the CEO:


Double Wagyu + Brisket Blend Burger, Homemade Candied Bacon-Tomato Jam, Truffle Aioli, Aged Swiss Cheese


He commented how he loved the deep flavor profile. The candied bacon tomato jam was so unique he asked the cashier whether they sold this on the side to take home !


My little one chose from their fun kids menu:


Single burger with a natural snack and a “freestyle” drink from their amazing soda machine, teas or Lemonades.


We went with a side order
of  “Cry + Fry” :                .


Double battered Onion Rings and hand cut Fries. We choose one of their fry premium toppings of Parm, Herb and Garlic Aioli. Awesome and a large portion more enough to share.


We had no room to try any of their custard Floats, shakes or Concretes this time. Next time somehow we will pace ourselves to have room !


National Burger Day {yup, that is a real thing} is coming up on Sunday May 28 . Get to Burger Fi and celebrate !!
